Approximately 60% of patients consult their doctor for what is primarily a social or stress-related problem. A medical approach is not ideal for these patients, but doctors lack appropriate options to address a patient’s loneliness or other social determinants of health. Solutions do exist, however.
Social Prescribing enables doctors to prescribe patients to local community activities and services. Patients are connected with a “Link Worker” who interviews them, and connects them with local groups that match their interests and lifestyle. Referrals can be made to activities evidenced to improve health outcomes, such as volunteering, nature exposure, arts, community, as well as local social services such as food stamps, legal and housing support. The UK is investing millions of pounds to enable Social Prescribing in every domestic primary care practice. Canada, Australia, and Japan are following their lead.
This newsletter aims to bolster the US Movement. We’ll highlight efforts made around the country and pull together calls to action on how to get involved.
